Protecting Canadian Citizenship

Tuesday, 28 October 2014

The Government has introduced a few changes to the Citizenship Act to reinforce the integrity of Canadian citizenship.

On Oct. 19th, 2014, Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister announced that Canadian citizenship has been under protection by the Government from abuse and deception.

The Citizenship Act has recently been changed with additional measures to support the Government to fight against deception and protect the citizenship program from abuse.

These measures include:

Increasing the penalties for fraud;
Determining authorized representatives to provide advice on Canadian citizenship;
Refusing fraudulent applications and barring them from reapplication for 5 years.
Further, some of the changes will assist the government in revoking citizenship for dual nationals which are convicted of serious crimes such as high treason, terrorism, or spying, depending on the sentence imposed.
